WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT WINNING THE WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARD?
It was a touching and proud moment in my career.
HOW DOES BEING SINGLED OUT AS A SUCCESSFUL WOMAN GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?
The success I have had was founded on the belief that if you work hard and are passionate about what you do, you will be rewarded regardless of gender. Combined this thinking with exceeding customer expectations and you have my formula for running my company.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN JUST ENTERING THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY?
Be prepared — be patient — be passionate and be resilient.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE GETTING INVOLVED IN THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY?
I graduated with a degree in Accounting. Out of college, I went to work for an accounting firm as an auditor. I was quickly promoted to an internal auditor position for a Japanese company. Subsequent promotions continued prior to accepting a position in the Finance Department for my brother’s concrete cutting company. This was beginning my career in the concrete industry.
HOW DID YOU GET THE POSITION YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
I began working in the finance department of my brother’s concrete cutting company located in Tijuana, Mexico. As he lost interest in the company, focusing more on his passion for architecture, I decided to begin my own company.
I founded Cortamex on July 1, 2001. It was not a concrete cutting company as you might suspect, but rather, a service oriented distribution organization for road builders and concrete cutting contractors. Initially I supplied professional diamond blades to local agencies in Baja California and small warehouses. I quickly grew and in my 10th year of business, I currently supply professional blades and highway safety products throughout the entire country of Mexico.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR POSITION?
The day-to-day dealings with my customers.
WHAT ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH, IF ANY?
In years past, I was involved with the Association of Young Professionals.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND AMBITIONS FOR YOUR POSITION?
To continue to expand my product line within the concrete / highway safety industry bringing high quality products to my customers.
WHAT TYPES OF CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE INDUSTRY?
Better global communication where innovations can be exchanged from country to country with greater efficiency.
