WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? EDUCATION? PREVIOUS JOBS?
I graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.  I’ve been at CTS Cement for 6 years.  Prior to this, I worked for The Pillsbury Company, Hallmark Cards, and Avalanche Publishing.  I’m currently the Marketing Director at CTS Cement Manufacturing Corporation.  Prior to CTS Cement, positions I’ve held include Marketing Director, Marketing Manager, Regional Human Resources Specialist, Sales Trainer, Account Executive, and Sales Representative. 

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE GETTING INVOLVED IN THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY?
I was in the consumer products industry and involved with food, greeting cards, gifts (i.e. frames, albums, candles, stationery, journals, etc.), calendars, and back to school products. 

HOW DID YOU GET THE POSITION YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
My brother-in-law works at CTS Cement and has high regard for the company, products, and people.  He would talk about CTS Cement when I was still at my previous company; during these conversations I would think how wonderful and fortunate he is to work at such a good company.  When CTS Cement was looking for a Marketing Director to manage and run their marketing department, my brother-in-law suggested that I apply for the position.  I didn’t have experience in the concrete industry and fortunately, the owner, president, CFO, and sales vice president were able to see that my marketing experience and skills were transferrable to CTS Cement.  I’m really glad they were able to see past this because I really love my job and working at CTS Cement.      

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR POSITION? 
My favorite aspect of marketing is threefold.  First, marketing is multi-faceted and diverse, ranging from advertising, promotions, brand and product campaigns to trade shows, editorial, sales presentations and literature, etc.  This makes everyday interesting and different.  Second, the creativity and analysis built in to marketing allows me to use all sides of my brain.  Third, the people I work with are of high caliber; we have high quality products, and there are a lot of opportunities to educate end users about our brands and products.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND AMBITIONS FOR YOUR POSITION?
My main goal is to continue educating end users about Rapid Set® as a viable alternative to Portland cement.  Rapid Set offers many advantages including durability, versatility, speed and ease-of-use along with cost benefits and environmental considerations. As a company, we’ve always strived to maximize our use of recycled materials and minimize our environmental impact with our products. In that sense, our products have always been green. Since our products have so many other advantageous features and benefits, we have been primarily educating people on these characteristics.  We have a strong base of loyal end users and continue to attract new users. We believe our loyal end users will continue using our products, and as consumers become more aware and concerned about the impact that products have on the environment, it is important that we educate people on the environmental benefits of our products.    

WHAT TYPES OF CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE INDUSTRY?
There’s a part of the industry that is comfortable with the way business has always been done and is slow to adopt new or improved technology.  While the familiar ways of doing things may have worked well for them, as times change and new technology becomes available to improve efficiencies, it is necessary to have an open mind to new ways of doing things.  The only constant is change and those who can change with the times will have more opportunities for growth and success.   

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN JUST ENTERING THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY?
My advice is for women to be their best selves by communicating and relating in a genuine, self-expressed way.  Women can positively impact the concrete industry by bringing a more kind, intuitive, and multi-tasking approach to this business.  We have a distinct advantage as who we innately are helps us better relate and get business done in a harmonious manner.
